class Descriptions

  • Contemporary

Class begins with a technical, guided group warm-up with emphasis on proper alignment, musicality, body awareness and endurance. Dancers will then have time to stretch on their own, finalizing their individual warm-ups, while listening to the track that will be used for choreography.

The choreography will challenge direction, balance, intention and stability, while evoking creative freedom and response.

  • technique

Focuses on building, refining and evolving fundamental contemporary dance techniques. Class will emphasize proper alignment, musicality and body awareness as dancers learn exercises that will encourage mobility, flexibility and fluidity.

Class will incorporate a center warm up, core/endurance building exercises, a deep stretch, center technique combinations and across the floor progressions to assist in furthering the dancers in technical skills and ability.

  • Improvisation

Improvisation at OM will explore connectivity and community within movement. The class will be a freeform approach that allows for dancers of all levels to move and interact with others with creative freedom in a safe space. Class will be structured in a circular environment, beginning with a grounding exercise.

Dancers will then be invited to move at their own leisure, as well as observe if they so choose.

  • floor work

    Form • Function • Fluidity

This class is designed for movers looking to build or re-visit the basic techniques of contemporary floor work. Each class will explore how to use the body to connect with gravity and utilize the floor as a dancing partner. Courtney offers a close, hands-on-approach to help understand the mechanics, build the strength, and use proper alignment to move in and out of the floor with efficiency and confidence. Each class will start with a guided improv, lead into progressions across the floor and finish with an all-encompassing floor work phrase.

  • jazz

Our jazz class draws from a variety of historical and contemporary styles such as Broadway, commercial, funk, and classical. Class will focus on syncopated rhythms, body isolations, and precision. Students will begin class with a warm-up, progress to across-the-floor exercises, and end with learning jazz choreography.

  • Acrobatics

Acrobatics uses strength and flexibility to perform gymnastic-based tricks. In this class, students perform conditioning exercises to prepare them for increased difficulty. It teaches flexibility, balance, strength, and coordination. OM Grown Dance Studios acro instructors use Acrobatic Arts curriculum and classes follow the Acrobatic Arts syllabus.

  • Ballet

Ballet technique classes are the foundation for training and focus on developing a solid ballet technique with emphasis on understanding correct body placement, proper use of turn out, coordination of the upper body, and use of arms. Class begins with work at the barre to build strength and coordination, followed by center exercises, culminating in a grand allegro combination or variation. Clear explanations of exercises and theory help students use the ballet vocabulary in a simple, practical way that leads to increased technical understanding, healthy physical development, and lifelong enjoyment.

  • Progressive ballet technique

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program that has been designed to enhance technique by focusing on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance. It is a unique training system using ballet-technique specific exercises to train skill acquisition in a graded and progressive manner from junior through to advanced levels.

The program helps with injury prevention and rehabilitation and enhances the ability of dancers to perform at their best.

  • Contemporary Tricks

Contemporary tricks is a class design to give dancers an opportunity to focus and build strength on contemporary inversions, floor work and/or singular complex movements. Often, acrobatic mats will be used to provide support for dancers as they work through solidifying their skills. Dancers can use this class to work on specific movements in choreography and or learn new tricks for future use.

  • Composition

Dance composition is learning how to make a dance! During the dance composition class, dancers will process movement ideas by creating material and manipulating the elements. Dancers will turn choreographic material into movement modules of various lengths to compose their own scores.
